Project Summary: The goal of this project is to improve school-based supports for both disciplinary and social and emotional learning. This will be accomplished by bringing together education researchers with stakeholders from one school to collaboratively redesign their learning ecosystem to integrate social and emotional learning (SEL) with disciplinary learning, in ways that are responsive to local community needs. Throughout the co-design and implementation process, video data will be collected and analyzed using knowledge analysis and interaction analysis to answer three research questions: (1) What affective and knowledge resources (i.e., distributed expertise) do teachers, counselors, administrators, and parents bring to the co-design process? (2) How are those resources shared during collaborative learning and co-design and taken up (or not) by other stakeholders? (3) How does the specific collaboration infrastructure implemented by the team enable knowledge sharing, co-design, and implementation of sustainable SEL-integrated learning ecosystems? Project work will occur in three phases: (1) sharing distributed expertise and mapping affective and knowledge resources; (2) co-design; and (3) implementation and adaptation. Project deliverables will include: (1) sample lesson plans integrating SEL and disciplinary learning; (2) models for wrap-around SEL support; (3) models for counselor-teacher-community collaboration, and (3) answers to research questions.
